Why Robin Has No Pants

I love Google.  It makes getting the answers to questions immediate and all-encompassing.

While watching some “New Scooby Doo Mysteries,” which were new in the early seventies, I found an awesome crossover with Batman and Robin.  However, I was immensely distracted by the fact that Robin had no pants.  Not even tights.  Guess, I’d never noticed.  I have not read the comics but I have watched the movies, old TV shows and some of the newer animated shows.  Apparently, now-a-days and live action 1970’s actors insisted on pants or tights.

So, I began to wonder “Why doesn’t Robin have pants?  And, why is he wearing Tinkerbell slippers?”  These are the driving questions that led me away from my television set.  FYI, for those of you less motivated than I but also wondering, he was an acrobat.  Once I read that it did seem vaguely familiar, like something I might actually answer correctly in the form of a Trivial Pursuit question.

So, here’s the short history of Robin.  His real name is Dick Grayson.  He was the son of an acrobatic family (hence, the pant-less outfit – reminiscent of a leotard).  His parents were killed.  Batman takes him under his wing (kindred pools of depression, I’m sure) as a young boy.  He serves to balance Bruce Wayne’s dark side, anchors him to his humanity (if you will), so he doesn’t abandon everything and become Batman heart and soul.  Eventually, he goes out looking for his parents’ killer.  Batman finds out what Dick is up to, reveals his true identity and begins training him.  Eventually, he becomes a different superhero named Nightwing and other people fill in the role of Robin.

P.S.  In regards to the unspoken question.  He’s not.

Will the real Batman please stand up...
