Experience STEM and its Impacts on Society at Tapia STEM Camps! These camps at Rice University offer a transformative experience for rising 8^th-12^th graders, combining academic excellence with a focus on equity and communication skills. Founded by Professor Richard Tapia, a distinguished mathematician and recipient of the National Medal of Science, these camps are designed to inspire and empower the next generation of STEM leaders.

Campers embark on a six-day, five-night journey immersed in the vibrant atmosphere of Rice University, one of the nation’s top research institutions. From the moment they arrive on campus, students are greeted with a sense of belonging and purpose, ready to tackle real-world STEM challenges.

The curriculum at Tapia Camps is carefully crafted to integrate STEM concepts with societal equity concerns. Examples of featured hands-on STEM projects include the carbon storage project, which explores safe storage of carbon dioxide underground in order to slow climate change. Another project challenges students to design their own computational algorithm for equitable college admissions. These projects not only enhance their technical skills but also instill critical thinking, problem-solving and collaboration – essential qualities for success in STEM fields and beyond.

Led by a team of dedicated researchers and Rice University students, the instructional sessions are interactive and dynamic. Campers learn directly from industry professionals, build friendships with students from other districts, and explore technologies shaping the future of STEM industries.

Beyond the classroom, Tapia Camps offer a holistic experience that includes dormitory living, campus tours and a field trip to prominent STEM institutions in Houston, such as the Space Center Houston and the NASA Johnson Space Center. These activities create a sense of community, friendship and camaraderie among campers, creating lasting memories and connections.
