10 Best Hairsprays for Houston Humidity
My beauty repertoire is probably closer to a teenager than a full grown adult. The last hairspray I owned I found under the sink at my mom’s house when we were helping her move. It was probably my sister’s. Finder’s keepers!
But, yeah, that’s about the amount of effort I put into it. I don’t even know where some of the random bottles of shampoo lining my tub have come from. Are cosmetics fairies a thing? Because I know I did not buy some of them.
Sadly, even my husband is more consistent in his product use. He’s been rocking that Pantene firm-hold hairspray for fifteen plus years.
However, I am on a quest to become a little wiser and more thoughtful in my beauty purchases. Fortunately, the next bottle to run out is my random bottle of hairspray. So, instead of waiting for a gremlin to replace it or just playing hairspray roulette I am quite mindfully looking to find a hairspray that will actually be great.
What I Really Really Want
My hairspray wishlist is something like this: Not going to give me cancer and can hold my hair in this Houston humidity for more than ten minutes. Wouldn’t it be great if I could look like the last time I looked in a mirror several hours later??? Sigh, dreams.
Now, if you are reading this from somewhere outside of the Houston area you may not really appreciate the humidity. If, say, you live somewhere with an average of 30% humidity and it spikes to 50% one day and you have the audacity to say, “Oh my gosh, this humidity is killing my hair!” You don’t understand.
Our air is about a molecule away from water 99% of the time. It is a true wonder we have not evolved gills. If we get a cold front or a special wind from on high and our humidity goes down to 70% you will literally see women dancing in the streets giving each other high-fives and complimenting our great hair day. For real. Humidity is no joke down here.
A Few Tips
A couple of things to help your style on a super humid day: don’t fight your natural hair. Taking your straight hair curly on a humid day may just not work. Another tip that works for all hair types is to start with a keratin treatment (an at-home version that is really popular is it’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In Plus Keratin) or a Brazilian blow-dry – sometimes products just aren’t enough.
So, with that in mind we are on the hunt for humidity friendly hairspray and for you we have rounded up the top ten!
10 Best Hairsprays for Houston Humidity
1. Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Strong (4.7/5):
A unique option available with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray is that it is available in multiple holds – from medium to extra strong. And, they are all well rated, though the strong level has a slightly higher rating than the other two.
2. Kenra Volume Spray 25 (4.6/5):
There are thousands of reviews on this product and it won 14 awards for being a top hairspray in 2017! Whew, busy year! It claims 120 hours of hold, 24 hour humidity resistance, and wind resistant up to 25 mph. That is a lot of work in a little can.
3. Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hairspray (4.6/5):
While the reviews for this spray are excellent, it is available in fewer locations and, as such, has fewer reviews available than the proceeding sprays. One reviewer puts it plainly, “I love ❤ the way this holds in damp humid weather. Really appreciate the size for travel, not sticky.” A common review is that this product is great for fine, thin hair.
4. Tresemmé Climate Protection Finishing Hairspray (4.5/5):
TRESemmé has been around for-ever so it seems logical that they have perfected hairspray. Their Climate Protection option is really affordable and has rave reviews from all hair types:
“I am African-American and have short, relaxed hair that I add semi-permanent color to occasionally…this one gave my hair great shine and bounce while protecting it from humidity.”
“I have naturally wavy hair that I straighten every day. This is the best hairspray I have ever used. It kept my hair straight and in place even in the extreme humidity during my beach wedding in Mexico. Absolutely love it.”
“My limp, fine, straight hair has done so much better since I switched to the complete line of climate control products…”
5. John Frieda Frizz Ease Moisture Barrier Firm Hold Hair Spray (4.4/5):
A budget contender with excellent reviews. It claims to “lock out humidity for up to 24 hours.” Intriguing. It also has a UV filter to protect color. A review from someone else who knows humidity, a Floridian, says, “This stuff works!…My hair goes frizzy, spraying this on my hair really helps. I have fine hair so a lot of the gel-like de frizz are to heavy for my hair and weigh it down. This stuff if great and light, I can spray it several times and it doesn’t weigh it down.”
6. KMS California Hair Stay Anit-Humidity Seal (4.4/5):
Across the board, big sites and small, KMS Hair Stay is beloved. A review from someone who can appreciate what humidity can be says, “I live in Nevada and have my entire life. When I travel to Florida I look like I should be in an eighties hair band! It’s like my hair had an explosion! I found this while there and will use it every time I travel to a humid climate. It keeps my hair calm and looking like it does in Nevada.”
7. Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Anti-Humidity Hairspray (4.4/5):
Garnier’s option was another one with repeat mentions and is extremely affordable. It can be found for under $3.50! One reviewer said, “Honestly, this is the best hair spray I have ever used… My hair is SO STUBBORN, and this stuff tames it no problem.”
8. Living Proof Instant De-Frizz Humidity Shield (4.3/5):
9. Oribe Impermeable Anti-Humidity Spray (4.2/5):
Oribe is a high-end product with a price tag to match. However, it is highly suggested for taming hair on “the sultriest of days.” It is paraben free and provides UV protection for your hair so it will be good for color-treated hair.
Living Proof’s Humidity Shield is rated a little lower than many of our others but we definitely wanted to include it because it is rated well, it is widely available, and it does not include any silicone (the common ingredient used to fight humidity), parabens, or phthalates. If you are trying to “purify” your cosmetics this would be a great option to start with.
10. L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray (4.1/5):
This hairspray has a crazy cult following and is recommended, in particular, for straight hair. A few years ago it was a big deal about that it would be sold in the U.S. Before that, stylists were smuggling it in like contraband. This is also the only hairspray on this list I have actually tried already. And, I did not enjoy the experience. I do not even remember if it worked well but I do remember the smell was overwhelming. I was having Aqua-Net 80’s flashbacks. I will not be revisiting this one but it was the spray that was suggested over and over again so I felt this list would be remiss without its inclusion. The choice is yours!
An alternate L’Oreal Paris product that was suggested for humidity, and particularly wavy hair, is L’Oreal Paris Advanced Hairstyle Lock It Weather Control Hairspray.

I live in south GA….air is like Houston and Florida. I’ve used L’Oreal Elnett Satin but even the unscented was too strong an aroma. I switched to Tresemme and use it daily…except on the days when our isn’t visible…)”low” humidity) – 70% or less.
I bought a spray called Deep Brilliance by Farouk while vacationing in Florida. It was incredibly humid and hot and it still kept my super straight hair from falling flat and it is not sticky.
I’d like to purchase again but the internet advertises a product called Chi Deep Brilliance -does anyone know if this is the same product?
I live in Ontario Canada and would need a source that ships to Canada.
