Nutrition Compromises in the Morning

You know, I try? However, if you’ve ever shared a meal with a three year old it can fairly be said that they canb be “challenging” eaters. One of my many compromises are those Quaker Oatmeal Breakfast Squares. We call them breakfast cookies because that is why my child will eat them and it is probably more accurate.

And when I say eat, I mean the whole thing in a relatively normal amount of time. This is not the case with 85% of the food placed before him. Eggs? Pancakes? Toast? We’re looking at maybe a 50% consumption rate over the span of at least an hour. Sometimes, I just do not have that kind of time. Like when we’re supposed to be at school at 9:00am and we do not wake up until 8:30am!

So, that brings us to the breakfast cookie compromise. At the very least, they are mostly whole oats (of course the next largest ingredients are high fructose corn syrup, sugar, and brown sugar – seems like maybe they could have skipped one of those?).

This morning I offered the little guy a breakfast cookie and some OJ. He happily accepted but stopped me at the door to make sure I really understood, “It has to have that white stuff [icing] on top and has sugar inside!”

Of course.
