First Day Hike – Coastal Prairie Edition DETAILS

From the organizer:

Hike through Galveston Island State Park’s endangered coastal prairie at your own pace to ring in the New Year right.

Ring in the new year with us by taking a self-guided hike on the Alligator Loop.  This is a great way to set an intention of getting outside and getting some exercise. Join people all across the nation as we hike on New Year’s Day and help us ring in 2023 and the beginning of Texas State Parks 100-Year Celebration!

This walk has very little shade, so hats and sunglasses are highly recommended. Plan ahead – bring water and bug spray.  All ages welcome, including your canine companions.

The suggested route will be approximately 2.1 miles (roundtrip) in length with interpretive stations along the route. Check in with the First Day Hike table at the Observation Tower parking lot on Nature Trail Road for maps, water refill station and trail information. Once you finish your hike, visit this table to log your mileage and get your FDH sticker!

  • Bring: Sunscreen, bug spray, water, weather appropriate clothing and appropriate shoes.
  • Meet: Observation Tower parking lot on Nature Trail Road
  • Cost: Entry fee is $5 for adults and FREE for children 12 & under. Park entry free with a State Parks Pass
