Arbor Day Tree Giveaway DETAILS

From the organizer:

Since 1977 more than 1.5 million seedlings have been shared with residents to plant in their yard, in community open space reserves and in forest preserves. Participate in one of The Woodlands longest standing traditions and help plant trees today for our community to enjoy for years to come.

This year 12 NEW native tree seedlings will be available. Trees can be categorized into overstory and understory trees. Trees that make up the overstory, or upper layer of the forest, are the dominant species and are typically greater than 60 feet in height at maturity.

  • Shortleaf Pine
  • Nuttall Oak
  • White Oak
  • Pecan
  • Sweetbay Magnolia
  • Black Willow

Understory trees make up the lower part of the canopy and range from 8-50 feet in height when fully mature. These trees are generally more shade tolerant than overstory trees.

  • Persimmon
  • Flowering Dogwood
  • Black Cherry
  • Chickasaw Plum
  • False Indigo
  • Button Bush

Each of these native seedlings benefit local wildlife. Flowering varieties provide nectar for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Berry producing trees offer small mammals and birds a source of food. All are critical hosts for beneficial insects.
