Hands-on discovery of what’s lurking beneath the murky bay waters.

Come join one of our weekly explorations of the connections between the mainland and our island paradise – Galveston Bay. Meet our volunteer guides at the Nature Center at 10:00 am for a brief orientation and restroom break before we drive towards the bay. Explorations generally last 75 minutes.


Discover the wetlands with a close-up look at the critters, grasses and birds that inhabit the marshland and bay.   Tour activities include hands-on-seining, fiddler crab sightings and more under the guidance  of  Friends of Galveston Island State Park (FoGISP) volunteers.

What to bring:

  • Park entry permit (received at park HQ on beach side of park)
  • Clothes & shoes to get wet (optional)
  • Water bottle
  • Camera (optional)
  • Binoculars (optional)

ARCHERY IN THE PARK
Tuesday, July 3 from 9 a.m. to noon
Join a Level 3 USA archery coach for an evening of family fun using Precinct 4’s mobile
archery range. Ages 7+.

SUMMER POP-UP ACTIVITIES
Tuesdays, July 3, 10, 24, & 31 and Saturday, July 28 at 10 a.m. 
Join a staff naturalist for a hands-on nature activity or lesson.

NATURE CENTER WITHOUT WALLS
Saturday, July 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
A naturalist leads this ongoing program to provide updates on the preserve, local wildlife,
and nature.

CANOEING AND FISHING
Wednesdays, July 11 & 25 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, July 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
For canoeing and fishing, meet Precinct 4’s Trails As Parks staff at the canoe launch. Wear
weather-appropriate attire, including closed toed shoes, a hat, and sunscreen. Ages 13+ for canoeing.

PROJECT WILD EDUCATOR WORKSHOP
Saturday, July 14 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
A workshop geared to formal and non-formal educators. Register HERE

VOLUNTEER DAY
Sunday, July 15 from 9 a.m. to noon
Meet staff at the park kiosk to remove invasive plant species during this volunteer workday.
Hand tools and gloves are recommended, but some will be provided. Ages 10+.

THIRD MONDAY BIRD COUNT AT KMP
Monday, July 16 from 7:30 a.m. to noon
Join the Houston Audubon Society for this monthly bird count. Previous counts have
identified more than 35 species at KickerilloMischer Preserve.

JR. RANGER CAMP – SUMMER DAY CAMP
Monday-Friday, July 16-19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and July 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Wildlife Day, Environmental Awareness Day, Fish Day, Jr. Canoe Training, and Friday is an off-site field trip to Sea Center Texas (transportation provided).

Ages 10-13 can earn a Jr. Ranger badge and certificate.

Wednesday, July 18 and Saturday, July 28 at 8 a.m.
Join this volunteer-led Tai Chi class at the far end of the back parking lot, opposite the

Turtle Patrol

Citizen scientists needed for turtle patrol and hike.

During the warm nesting season, park rangers conserve habitat, eliminate trash, and patrol the beaches for critters. We want you to help our endangered sea turtles and join us.

You can become a citizen scientist, and help the park to understand more about the Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle, an endangered species that nests Galveston Island State Park. We will take a stroll down the beach and explore ways to help the environment.

We will meet at the day use picnic area and begin a short hike down the beach and through the dunes, patrolling for turtles on this easy, beach hike. Families, groups, and pets on a leash are welcome.

Who: Park Ranger Lisa Reznicek is inviting everyone to join

Before you can join us:
• Park entry fee paid before trip (park permit on vehicle)
• All children must be accompanied by an adult

What to expect:
• Great family fun for all ages.

• 1 hour program of games, activities, and short hike
• Restrooms available
• Camera-worthy shots of a great Texas beach

Discover the beaches and dunes while hunting for island treasures.

Beach Exploration hikes start at the park’s Nature Center, located on the bay side of the park, close to the main highway. We begin with a brief orientation, shell identification, and restroom break before driving to the day-use beach to view special habitats leading to the sandy beach. Be prepared for sun, surf, and great hands-on learning!


Get a close-up look at the many critters and birds that inhabit the sand, surf and seaweed. This Saturday tour includes seining, searching for ghost crabs, and beach combing under the guidance of Friends of Galveston Island State Park (FoGISP) volunteers.

Island Survivor at Galveston Island SP @ Galveston Island State Park

Game of life and death in paradise for beach safety.

Could you survive the wilderness of Galveston Island State Park? This paradise can be harsh for those without beach safety knowledge. Get the basics at this fun game for the whole family!

  • What skill will keep you from drowning?
  • Could you perform a shoreline rescue?
  • How do you avoid big rattlesnakes in the dunes?
  • What major injuries should you prepare for at the beach?
  • Can you name the deadliest animal in the park?

If you know the answer to these and other beach survival questions, come share your knowledge and learn about the surprising answers with Ranger Lisa. Prizes awarded thanks to the Galveston Island Beach Patrol.
